Robot Readiness: How to Know If Your Business Is Ready for Robotics

1. Business objective clarity. "We need to automate" isn't an objective. "We need to cut order-picking labor hours by 30% in the east dock without adding shifts" is. If you can't state the target in a number, you can't tell whether the robot worked.
2. Process selection. The best first candidate is high-volume, repetitive, physically consistent, and low-variance. Companies routinely pick their most painful process instead of their most automatable one — and painful usually means complex, which means edge cases, which means a pilot that never converts.
3. Workforce readiness. Employees decide whether a robot succeeds. If the first time your floor team hears about automation is when a crate arrives, you've already created resistance. Adoption planning — who gets retrained, who owns the robot day to day, what happens to displaced tasks — belongs in the plan before procurement.
4. Technical infrastructure. Wi-Fi coverage in the aisles, charging locations, floor conditions, network security policy, and a named internal owner for uptime. These are boring and they are where most deployments actually break.
5. Scalability logic. One robot is an experiment. Ten is an operating model. Decide before the first unit how you'd scale, what data you'd need to justify it, and who signs the expansion.
What a readiness assessment produces
A proper assessment doesn't recommend a vendor. It produces a prioritized list of automatable processes, a baseline measurement plan, an adoption and change-management plan, an infrastructure gap list, and a vendor-neutral specification you can put in front of suppliers.
